Yoga in Every Day - Your Practice

Students often are frustrated with the irregularity of their own practice of Asanas (postures) and Meditation. My instruction is to start small, this is the discipline to keep to until one feels their Saddhana -practice has become a habit in their life. There is a simple technique to use.

What happens that prevents you from creating a daily Saddhana -practice is that you firstly get highly motivated (this is good), then you get on your Yoga mat, this is great, you made it to 2nd base and sometimes the most difficult part of beginning a Saddhana. So you are actually on your mat and begin with ease, oohh yes the body awareness feels wonderfully opening, stretching, warm and releasing …the mind is still……and so you go on until 1 – 2 hours has passed, you had the time that day for your Sadhanna, this is great. Feeling fantastic you get on with your day. The next day comes and you don't have 1-2 hours for your Saddhana, so you simply get on with your day. The next day comes and you don't have 1-2 hours for your Saddhana, so you simply get on with your day….on and on this goes until one day your body begins to feel uncomfortable again, and your mind overburdened. You get to a point where you must do something about this. Remembering how good you felt after your last Yoga practice you return again to your mat, this is great, however, all the benefits you received from your last practice have dissolved and you have to start all over again. Is this sounding familiar?

The technique to create a habit of Saddhana (practice) in your daily life is to 1. Put a clock near your mat , 2. Get onto your mat, 3. time yourself to 10 minutes of Sadhanna, 4. When time is up get off your mat immediately, this is the discipline, and enjoy your day. Do this for 3 months, 6 mornings per week. Create a Sadhanna habit in your life, just as you would clean your teeth or take a shower.
